Looking for a free and easy scrap block? I’ve got you.
Please note that unlike my finished patterns, this freebie block tutorial doesn't have as much detail, particularly for piecing order.
This block will finish at 14 x 14 in. (14.5 x 14.5 in. with seam allowance). Here's how many blocks you'll need to create various quilt sizes.

Each block will have 3 colors: Flower (Color 1), leaves (Color 2), and the Background (BG). Flower and leaves are both scrappy, and the background can be too, so gather like colors together and play around with the layout.
To make the shape make sense, I recommend keeping each flower within one color family, and the leaves in another. For example, in one block you may make the flower (Color A) pink scraps, and the leaves (Color B) green scraps.
For 1 block you will need:
Color A (Flower):
- (3) 3 x 3 in.
- (6) 2.5 x 2.5 in.
Color B (Leaves):
- (2) 3 x 3 in.
- (4) 2.5 x 2.5 in.
BG (Background):
- (3) 3 x 3 in.
- (2) 1.5 x 4.5 in.
- (2) 3.5 x 4.5 in.
- (2) 3.5 x 14.5 in.
- (1) 2.5 x 4.5 in.
Half Square Triangles (2 at a Time)
The most complicated skill (besides patience for piecing) in this block is the half square triangle. We will make 2 at a time.
Pair (1) Color A 3 x 3 in. piece with (1) Color B 3 x 3 in. piece. Pin them right sides together. Then draw a line from one corner diagonally to the opposite. Sew a quarter inch from each side of the line. Cut along the line you drew, press the two HSTs open and trim them to 2.5 x 2.5 in.
Pair (2) Color A 3 x 3 in. pieces (one each) with (2) BG 3 x 3 in. pieces. Complete the same process for a total of (4) Color A x BG half square triangles.
Pair (1) Color B 3 x 3 in. piece with (1) BG 3 x 3 in. piece. Complete the same process for a total of (2) Color B x BG half square triangles.
Layout
Because this block is scrappy, you may want to play around with the placement of each piece. Here is the overall layout you will want to follow:
BG is black, Color A is pink, and Color B is green.
To allow for seam allowance when binding or sewing blocks together, your pieced block should be 14.5 x 14.5 in.
